چکیده

We describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of emulated hardware transactional memory, specifically the Intel Haswell Restricted Transactional Memory (RTM) architectural extensions for x86/64, within a virtual machine monitor (VMM). Our system allows users to investigate RTM on hardware that does not provide it, debug their RTM-based transactional software, and stress test it on diverse emulated hardware configurations. We are able to accomplish this approximately 60 times faster than under emulation. A noteworthy aspect of our system is a novel page-flipping technique that allows us to completely avoid instruction emulation, and to limit instruction decoding to only that necessary to determine instruction length. This makes it possible to implement RTM emulation, and potentially other techniques, far more compactly than would otherwise be possible. We have implemented our system in the context of the Palacios VMM. Our techniques are not specific to Palacios, and could be implemented in other VMMs. This project is made possible by support from the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) via grant CNS0709168, and the Department of Energy (DOE) via grant DE-SC0005343.

But How Do We Really Debug Transactional Memory Programs?

With recent announcements of hardware transactional memory (HTM) systems from IBM and Intel, HTM will soon be available for widescale adoption. Such platforms, combined with tested and stable software transactional memory systems, are likely to make real transactional memory (TM) systems available for the first time, which promises to be a more attractive alternative than lock-based parallel pr...

From Plasma to BeeFarm: Design Experience of an FPGA-Based Multicore Prototype

In this paper, we take a MIPS-based open-source uniprocessor soft core, Plasma, and extend it to obtain the Beefarm infrastructure for FPGA-based multiprocessor emulation, a popular research topic of the last few years both in the FPGA and the computer architecture communities. We discuss various design tradeoffs and we demonstrate superior scalability through experimental results compared to t...

Analysis of the Intel Pentium's Ability to Support a Secure Virtual Machine Monitor

A virtual machine monitor (VMM) allows multiple operating systems to run concurrently on virtual machines (VMs) on a single hardware platform. Each VM can be treated as an independent operating system platform. A secure VMM would enforce an overarching security policy on its VMs. The potential benefits of a secure VMM for PCs include: a more secure environment, familiar COTS operating systems a...

Fault-Tolerant Execution on COTS Multi-core Processors with Hardware Transactional Memory Support

The demand for fault-tolerant execution on high performance computer systems increases due to higher fault rates resulting from smaller structure sizes. As an alternative to hardware-based lockstep solutions, software-based fault-tolerance mechanisms can increase the reliability of multi-core commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) CPUs while being cheaper and more flexible. This paper proposes a softwa...

Using hardware transactions in the GHC runtime system

Hardware support for transactional memory (HTM) is now mainstream with commercial offerings from both Intel and IBM. This new flexible hardware tool for synchronization gives opportunities to improve the performance of language-level synchronization and to simplify runtime system implementation. Our research has shown that concurrent data structure performance in GHC is limited when taking the ...
